MATERIALS

ENGLISH WILLOW

This is a soft, fibrous timber. This type of willow is the preferred choice for the majority of bat manufacturers due to its high performance affect when striking the ball. Regardless of type however, willow will become damaged and prone to breakages over time. The cricket bat can become scarred, bruised and dented due to the nature of the game and the frequent, high intense impacts of the ball hitting the cricket bat.

KASHMIR WILLOW

Kashmir willow comes from India. This is largely utilised by cricket bat manufacturers as a substitute for English Willow. The Kashmir willow is regarded as a harder wood and in comparison to English willow does not have the same performance effect i.e. a player will not experience the same "sweet spot" when striking the ball. Kashmir willow will only be used for lower range and priced cricket bats. It is unlikely that a regular adult player, playing at a reasonable standard, would choose to use a Kashmir willow cricket bat.

THE SWEET SPOT EXPLAINED

Every batter knows that there is a special spot on a bat where the shot feels best. It sometimes feels so good that there is almost no sensation at all when the bat hits the ball. The sweet spot on a cricket bat is defined as the point where the ball receives maximum acceleration. Some players prefer cricket bats with a large bow whereas others don't. Increasingly, professional players' preference is for a larger bow and thicker edges to better meet the rigors of the modern game. The size of the bow can have an impact on the pick-up of the cricket bat, as an increased bow can often result in the cricket bat having a heavier pick-up. Some bows are higher or lower down the bat depending on batsman's hitting style, or to reflect the pitches which you play on.

What size are you?

  • The standard Men's width is "D". For Women, the standard width is "B". If the majority of shoes you own fit adequately, these are the widths you should select.

  • If the shoes you own tend to feel overly spacious in width, you should consider selecting a narrower width size. If the shoes you own tend to feel noticeably narrow or snug, then you should consider selecting a wider width size.

  • If your feet seem "between" sizes and you cannot decide which size to select, we suggest you choose the larger size. You can make adjustments for a better fit with socks, insoles, or a different lacing pattern.

Sizing Tips

  • Your heel should fit snug with no slipping. The midfoot of the shoe under your arch and over the top of your foot should be snug but not tight. You should have enough room in the toe box to wiggle your toes. New Balance shoes are made to fit directly out of the box. They do not need to be broken in.

  • People are more than twice as likely to buy a shoe that is too small than too big. Clues that your shoes are too small or narrow include - foot cramping or "falling asleep" while running or just after running or the formation of blisters and calluses between or on your toes.

  • Feet typically get bigger with age. We encourage you to have your feet measured every year. Women's feet often become a half-size (or more) larger after pregnancy.

  • Your left and right feet may differ in length or width as much as a full size. Be sure to measure and try shoes on both feet, and always buy shoes to fit your larger foot.

  • If your feet seem "between" sizes and you cannot decide which size to select, we suggest you choose the larger size. You can make adjustments for a better fit with socks, insoles, or a different lacing pattern.

  • Since feet always swell during the day, we encourage you to try shoes on later in the day when your feet are at their largest.
